Because of the
warm weather this year, the water plants are growing fast. The Brookfield
Zoo would dearly love all your extra tropicals. When your single
sprig of water hyacinth starts crowding your pond, pack your excess
in garbage bags. We'll accept donations from anyone, member or non-member,
for delivery to the Zoo. Last year we sent two truckloads plus whatever
individual deliveries were arranged.
If possible,
we would like to suggest that water lettuce be bagged separately.
While hyacinth can be used in any exhibit, the water lettuce cannot
be given to primates. The zoo can also use bare-root water lilies
if you are thinning overgrown pots.
Please watch
the site. We'll post collection dates - usually a dinner meeting
or the Koi Show - in mid-summer.
You do not have to wait for the monthly
meetings to collect; you may gather them at any time and drop them
off at the zoo at your convenience. Anyone interested in donating
