"Because of their beautiful coloring and often extreme hardiness, goldfish have become one of the most popular pets in the world."

When one speaks of Goldfish the immediate thought is of that cute little gold creature that lives in the glass bowl. The special prize at the county fair or the typical first "pet." The Goldfish is most likely one of our first childhood memories of being given responsibility. By reading "Goldfish" by Paul Paradise I have found a new appreciation for this creature and it’s history. He is much bigger then the glass bowl we imagine him in.

The Japanese have given us the many varieties that we know of today. This book helps us to think beyond the common goldfish. The world of the goldfish hosts some that we call the Common, the Lionhead, the Comet, the BubbleEye, the Hong Kong Redcaps (my favorite) and the Calico. All unique unto themselves and all offering a trait beloved by their owners. Each needing, and creating, special attention. For instance the Lionhead, being a bit meek, is best suited indoors then out. Outdoor ponds tend to have the heartier, more aggressive fish and the Lionhead is at a disadvantage for survival. However, most goldfish do well in outdoor ponds and I have personally seen many thrive in that environment. Be sure to educate yourself before placing your goldfish in their permanent home.

Paradise covers many topics in this book and offers many full color illustrations as well. He takes you from aquarium to garden pond. He explores each environment and how to have successful, healthy fish in each. He helps you create each water home and advises on filtration as well. He also covers such topics as diseases and parasites and what to do if faced with these challenges. If you are interested in breeding your goldfish he offers plenty of advice and information on successful breeding as well.

After completing this book I certainly had a new found appreciation for the "other pond fish" the Goldfish. He has so much to offer and in his own unique way is a wonderful addition to your water features.

Happy Pondering!! - Debra

I give this book 2.5 Fish.
