Of all issues when building a koi pond, "...a properly designed pond is the most important." - Burt Ballou

Unless you have a birthday, have a few social events or love the frigid temperatures and darkness, January can be a bleak month. I would think that our members, and others, are sitting back in armchairs laying plans for spring. Drifting off thoughts to adding on, building new or revamping the creation they already have on their property. Amongst those daydreams are thoughts of crystal water, colorful koi and the joy that the spring brings to us.

The next few months will be filled with plans and conversation of "when spring comes I am going to..." As we all know well too well, these plans must be supported by plumbing, filtration, liners and in some cases "flux capacitors." The books, "AKCA Guide to Filters and Pre Filters" and "AKCA Guide to Pond Construction" are definitely a must read for those armchair winter days or nights. .

I must be honest and admit these books were a bit of a challenge for me to read because some of the mechanical "stuff" but I did find myself learning more than I had known about the pond and how it should be working. What better way to educate yourself then to read and develop an understanding? Father Koi (the husband) found these more enjoyable because he is more mechanically inclined than I.

The books lay the ground work for creation and construction. You will be able to arm yourself with the knowledge needed if you were to install yourself or whether you were to enlist the talents of a professional. After all, it is best to talk the language of the professional and be able to understand what they will be performing and creating for their fee.

If you are building with concrete, fiberglass or a liner these offer much information. You will find information about the PVC, the pumps, drains (don't be afraid to have through the liner bottom drains), setting the skimmer, hobbyist filters, commercial filters and the stages of filtration. Who better to lend a hand then the Associated Koi Clubs of America?

I consider these books a "set" and would recommend that you check both out together if you are interested. They compliment each other and offer incredible amounts of information from breaking ground through adding fish to the final creation.

Please see me at the Club meetings, or send an email, if you are interested in these two books. I also would be more than happy to discuss your specific needs and search the library for a book, or video, that will help you. Next time I will be selecting a video to review and look forward to bringing that to you as well.

I give this set of books 4 Fish!
