I have a small fish pond in Canada with koi that have grown to a pretty good size. They are too big to bring inside, so I would like to keep them outside. Will they freeze or hibernate or something or will they die?

If your pond is less than 4 feet deep, your fish will not survive a Canadian winter, no matter what you put on the bottom of the pond. Koi are cool-water fish, they can handle temps down to 38 degrees F, but lower will stress them too much to survive. Some Options:

  1. Erect a small poly house over your pond and keep it heated with a space heater through the winter, enough to keep the water from icing over completely.
  2. Get a large vat (600 gallons) from Aquatic Eco-systems and set it up in your basement along with the filter from your pond. Figure on 20-25 gallons of water minimum per inch of koi in the vat.
  3. Find a pond enthusiast friend with a big deep pond and board your fish with him for the winter.
