You have a great website!

We recently put in a pond and need a lot of help! We don't have a filter...I hope this isn't a dumb question but do you need one in order to have fish in the pond? We have a fountain - we don't run it all of the time.

Also, we have a lot of algae...would a filter help us with this? Our pond is 4' x 6' x 18".

If we do need a filter can you recommend an easy care one?

Thanks for the compliment, Nancy. We are very proud of the site.

Your pond volume is about 250 gallons, and is fine as it stands for a few goldfish, as long as you've got plants and are willing to do periodic water changes (about 20%, twice a week). They'll do better with a small filter, rated for double the voume it says on the box. If it has a self-contained UV in it, it'll take care of the microscopic "pea-soup" algae. Hair algae won't respond to anything but a brush. Average cost of a good quality filter will be around $300-$350.Your pond can handle one or two small koi, but only with a filter.
