A couple of quick questions, I understand lettuce is good for Koi? I usually feed them the wheat germ based food until it gets warmer, and then they get a higher protein food. My neighbor feeds hers dehydrated shrimp and she said you can also add lettuce to their diet. What kind of lettuce, how much, and how finely chopped? Also what do you think about the dehydrated shrimp? Any feeding tips? Thanks!

Dried shrimp are fine, but not until the water temperature is consistantly above 70 degrees, and only if they are rehydrated first. They are a huge protein load, and koi digestive systems and pond filter bacteria can't handle the load when the water's cold.

Unless you are talking about tiny krill, koi pharyngeal teeth can't handle the toughness of the dried shrimp. Rehydrating them first is fine, but feed sparingly.

Lettuce? Just toss a whole head of Romaine in the pond. It'll take them a while to catch on, but your fish will love tearing chunks off it and bouncing it around the pond. Frozen peas without the skins are good, so are quartered grapefruit, watermelon, canteloupe, oranges, and almost anything else edible. Koi are carp. You know...organic garbage disposals!
