We became members on Sunday. just came back from the show and loved it...acknowledging "rule number one" we bought too many new fish. Fortunately we have a large (3000 gallon) pond with plenty of cirulation/filtration(6600pgm).

What is the best way to sort/rid/screen our baby koi born this year? Many are ugly brown and we otherwise have too many. We have lotza plants so netting them is way too hard. Is it best to wait until fall when the plants are dying and the fish slowing down? I don't want to stress the others any more than necessary, so I'm hoping for some type of baby fish trap that only allows the small fish to enter, but not leave, and then I could sort/rid. Can't find any thing on the web...

Welcome to the club! We always get tempted at the trade show too.

Please remember to quarantine your new fish in warm water for at least 3 weeks before introducing them to your pond. See the website for quarantine and KHV information.

If your sprats were hatched this spring, they should be about 3 inches long now. Go to Sam's Club and get the biggest outdoor inflatable pool you can find. Pump out all but about 6 inches of water from your pond into this pool, net your bigger fish into this pool, and get all the itty-bits netted out and into a separate holding tank. Take the opportunity to flush out all the crud from behind your rocks with the remaining water, and then sump all the crud out to waste. Cull from there.

Refill your pond from the pool and top off with fresh water treated with Novaqua.

There is no such thing as a baby koi trap. Invent one and retire on the proceeds.
