Dear Dr. Bob,

Last spring/summer, we went to Sid's Greenhouse to make our annual purchase of water hyacinths. They had a very poor selection and at the suggestion of their staff, waited a few weeks until they got in a new shipment. We eventually did purchase a few sprigs which never grew or multiplied over the summer. Usually, we have to take 1/2 of our hyacinths out of our pond to even see our Koi. Any clue why they didn't grow last summer?

Regards, Tim.

Dear Tim,
Temperature. Hyacinths are tropical plants, flourishing in warm water and hot sun. Last summer was cool by comparison, and the water hyacinths didn't like it.

Please remember, if your water hyacinths do well this year, the Club sends surplus plants to the Brookfield Zoo, where they are used as dietary supplements and toys by the Tropic World critters. We arrange for dropoffs at the dinner meetings and deliver to the zoo
the next day. The Shedd Aquarium wants a piece of the action, too.
