Bob,

We are experiencing an increase in the Nitrite level in our pond. How can we get this down? We have 0 ammonia, pH = 7.5 and we salted to about 0.1%. Koi are all eating and doing well it seems. The Nitrite registers at the first 0.25 ppm after 5 minutes. Will the microbe lift/Nite-out product work for this?

Hi Nancy,
Your best bet here is 30% water changes once or twice a week if practical, salt to 1.88 ppt (1.5 lbs per 100 gal), and cut way back on your feeding. You have a classic "spring pond syndrome", where your ammonia-to-nitrite bacteria are working just fine, but your nitrite-to-nitrate bugs haven't developed yet. There is usually a two-week lag between the two. The Microbe-lift product is a good one, but it will not speed up the process significantly, although it will give you a good starter culture.
