The Eighth Annual Tosai* Auction - June 12, 2010

Chair: Bry Bateman

*What is a Tosai? It's a one-year-old Koi.

The purpose of this auction is to buy quality baby fish in bulk from their breeders, then make them available to our club members at an affordable price. Their new owners then get to grow them up big and beautiful and bring them to the Koi and Goldfish Show. As a matter of fact, we give a prize each year to the best fish from that year's tosai auction.

This is a Members - Only event, but you can join up right there at the auction if you wish.

NEW ADDITIONS IN FOR JUNE 12 TOSAI AUCTION!!

Over the weekend of May 15-16, Bry and Bay Bateman visited Koi Acres in Scandia, Mn., on a mission to select some longfin koi for the upcoming Tosai Auction.  Upon arriving there, however, it was immediately discovered that there were no longfins!!  BUT, what we found instead were some of the prettiest Shusui and Ochiba Shigure that we’ve seen anywhere.  We snapped up 10 of each of these.

They are of such superb quality that we have decided to have them available on a pre-reserved basis for $85 each.  The first ten who respond will be given a number prior to the auction on Saturday.  They may select from the twenty koi in the order of the number they receive.  The remaining 10 koi will then be placed in the auction tank.

If interested in reserving one of these special koi, please email bryzkoi@aol.com.  You may pay at the auction, prior to drawing the numbers.  The drawing of numbers and selection of the 10 koi will begin at 11:00 AM on the 12th.

It’s Tosai Auction Time!

We are happy to announce the annual MPKS Tosai Auction, to be held once again at the Batemans’ yard and ponds, on Saturday, June 12th.  Registration will begin at 11:00 AM,, with the auction starting at approximately Noon.  There will be plenty of snacks, liquid refreshments, and lunch (burgers and dogs), so come hungry!

We have hand selected 28 special koi from Hammock Koi Farm in Tennessee, bred from Japanese imported parent koi.   The koi have been in quarantine in the Batemans’ home since November, so their good health is assured.  In past years we have had 15 to 20 “special” Tosai available for pre-sale, but this year we thought we would throw them all into the ring, so members can have fun finding the ‘ringers’ and maybe picking up one or two great show quality koi at a bargain.  We have a great mix of some classic as well as some less common varieties.  Following is an inventory of the koi that will be up for auction:    Kohaku (7), Showa (2), Sanke (1), Shiro Utsuri (7), Hi Utsuri (1), Ki Utsuri (2), ‘Peach’ Utsuri (very unusual) (1), Yamabuki Ogon (3), Tancho Kohaku (2), Ki Tancho Showa (also very unusual) (1), and Kage Showa (1).

In addition, we will be selecting about 15 imported Japanese longfin koi from Koi Acres for the auction.  These koi have been in quarantine at Mike Swanson’s facility in Minneapolis, and are sure to be a hit.  So whether you’re looking for a show koi, an unusual specimen for your pond, or a new variety you have never tried before, or you just want to hang out and have a good time on a Saturday afternoon, mark your calendars and come on over!

Bidding will start anywhere between $5 and $25.  All profits from the auction go to the MPKS General Fund.  This is a members-only function.  We hope to see you on the 12th!

When: 10 AM - Noon- Previewing of Fish. The special fish drawings will be at 11:00 or when everyone involved is present and accounted for. The regular auction will begin at noon. Steve Childers, editor of Koi USA, will be our special guest, and he will be available to answer questions, talk koi and filtration or any other topics with folks.
